No shortcuts in organizing

This past weekend I helped Ed organize his office. We spent most of Sunday shuffling papers, rearranging furniture, setting up systems, etc.

When it came to the closet, we were both tired but determined to finish. I pulled down a green shoe box from the top shelf to sort through and Ed quickly said “just skip that box”.

Filled with curiosity, I asked why so I could understand. He said something like “it’s not important, let’s just move on.”

I could sense his frustration with the mess and how he wanted to just be done with it all.

I then reminded him that there are no shortcuts in the organizing process. Everything has to be gone through at some point.

And It’s easier to just get it done now while we’re in the thick of things, have time, and have built up so much momentum.

He took a deep breathe and agreed.

We carried on and opened the box together and it turned out all the random stuff inside already had a place to go from our morning of assigning homes to everything! It literally took about 3 minutes to unpack the contents of the box (plus some critical time for him to reminisce!!!).

He was so relieved afterwards and has been smiling about his office since!!!

This past weekend reminded me of our trip to Colorado last year when we came across a sign that said “shortcutting prohibited” in which Ed insisted we take a photo. Above is the photo.

Moral of the story- Go through the box, make the decisions, get it done. There are no shortcuts!
